Sciences

At Sycamore Academy, we understand the importance of science in our rapidly changing world. Therefore, our entire learning community focuses on science together, enabling all of us to have conversations and share ideas.

Earth Science

We will begin each year by studying various aspects of Earth Science. The entire school will engage in learning about our planet.  Students will learn weather concepts and how weather affects our planet.  Students will examine ways that we can help our planet and preserve our resources for future generations. Students will also examine space, comparing and contrasting our planet and others.  Technology allows us to view simulations of these concepts.

Physical Science

Physical Science is any of the natural sciences, such as physics, chemistry, and astronomy, that deal primarily with non-living materials. During the second trimester, the students will engage in learning various topics and participate in scientific activities and share their learning across grade levels. Our Science Showcase will be held during trimester 2. This showcase will allow for teachers to create an environment of discovery from Transitional Kindergarten through eighth grade wherein students participate in hands-on science experiments as they debate theories, collaborate over findings and reflect on their learning.

Life Science

The third trimester will be dedicated to learning about life cycles throughout the school.  From observing the butterfly life cycle to building a self-sustaining terrarium, students explore, discuss and reflect the building blocks of life.  Students gain a clear understanding of the interdependence of all living things and our role in preserving a balance.

Engineering/coding

Engineering For Kids brings science, technology, engineering, and coding, to all grades in a fun and challenging way through class lessons, challenges, and clubs. We are proud to inspire children to build on their natural curiosity by teaching engineering coding concepts through hands-on learning. Engineering is, after all, one of the fastest growing industries in the world!

Environmental Science

Students will work with the California Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) Curriculum

The EEI Curriculum uses the environment as a context to help students learn science. This curriculum allows teachers to integrate environmental literacy into classroom instruction while introducing students to California’s unique environment.

 Physical activities/ Health and Wellness

All students will enjoy physical education every Monday through Thursday.  Students will be guided through specific skill-based activities as they build their aerobic capacity, abdominal strength, upper body strength, endurance, and flexibility to improve their overall body composition. Physical education provides a way to teach students new skills and ideas in a hands-on fashion. Physical education proves to help improve the physical health, social extroversion, and psychological capabilities.

Additionally, throughout the year students will be taught about making smart food choices, being responsible for one's own hygiene needs, defending against communicable diseases and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
